WOMEN UNIFY IN NEW SOCIETY

After months of planning, the women's groups from legacy parishes of St. Hugh, Mater Christi, and St. Mary have come together. We are now the new St. Paul VI Parish Women’s Society. On Wednesday, October 6 we gathered at Mater Christi Church to recite the Rosary and proceeded to the Marian Room for our first official meeting. All together, there were 45 women present.

After much discussion, we chose our new name, set dues of $10 for the first year, announced some future meeting and event dates, and enjoyed each other’s company over Oktoberfest refreshments. Marla Curran from the North Riverside Public Library engaged us with tips on researching our family genealogy.

Co-presidents are Teresa Hall / St. Mary, 708-525-3082, hallrts@comcast.net; Carol Dvorak / Mater Christi, 708-280-6406, ccdvorak123@yahoo.com; and Susan Kahler / St. Hugh, 708-805-1007, sclarekahler@gmail.com. Special thanks to Carole Eipers for helping initiate the unification process.

NEXT WOMEN’S SOCIETY MEETINGS

All women and young ladies of our parish are warmly invited to come, mingle with friends and meet new ones, and join our Women’s Society. Besides a possible special lecture, we’ll make some decisions and enjoy social time together. A preliminary calendar of events will be distributed.

Our meetings will be held the first Wednesday of each month (except January). The Rosary will begin at 6:30 pm in Mater Christi Church, followed by the meeting at 7 pm in the lower level Marian Room.

For more information, contact one of our co-presidents: Teresa Hall (708-525-3082, hallrts@comcast.net), Carol Dvorak (708-280-6406, ccdvorak123@yahoo.com) and Susan Kahler (708-805-1007, sclarekahler@gmail.com).

HISTORIC REFERENCE OF THE MATER CHRISTI WOMEN'S GUILD

The Women’s Guild of Mater Christi Church is open to all women of all Parishes. Our common bond is our faith and our desire to serve God and his people. Our mission is to unite and to create opportunities for Christian women to enrich themselves and the people of God by their active involvement in charitable, spiritual, educational and social works in our parish and our community. We network with the North Riverside community, the Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women, and other groups and organizations, including the Holy Name Society.

The Guild was established as the Tabernacle Guild in September 1951. Its primary purpose at the time was care and maintenance of the church altar and vigil lights, although it also engaged in spiritual and charitable works, and members helped out at the school. As times changed, so did the role of the Guild. Upkeep of the altar and vigil lights was reassigned, allowing the Guild to focus on its charitable, spiritual and social works. This also prompted its name change. The Women’s Guild has remained an active part of the parish continually since 1951, and boasts one of the highest memberships of all women’s guilds in the Chicago Archdiocese.

Monthly meetings were usually held on the first Wednesday of the month from September through May. Following an opening prayer, the president presided over the meeting which includes reports from officers, board members and committee heads. Thereafter refreshments were served and a wide variety of entertainment is provided for everyone’s enjoyment. Socializing and meeting new friends was also an important part of every meeting.

The Women’s Guild sponsored spiritual, social and fundraising events such as an annual retreat, fashion shows, a bake sale and raffle, and a Mission Dinner each December to benefit our group's charitable works. Our charitable functions had raised generous amounts of money and other donations to help worthwhile causes such as, Helping Hand, Catholic Charities, School Sisters of Notre Dame Sister House, Housing Forward, Respect Life, and the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Members of our Wake Committee met with parishioners who have lost loved ones to offer prayer and support. Our Baptismal representatives welcomed the newest members to our Parish by attending Baptism ceremonies and presenting meaningful gifts to the child and family.

Our Guild sponsored parish hospitality, May Crowning and the Parish’s annual Evening of Reflection, and it worked with a local shelter to aid those in our community who are less fortunate. Guild members and their families also worshiped together monthly at a Mass offered for the intentions of Guild members both deceased and living.
